This film was made for French Television and eventually sold to SBS TV in Australia.

This was my first experience of remote Australia and a true adventure! The idea was to revisit the golden days of the 1950’s by taking a boxing tent on the road across the country. In the 50’s, the boxing tent would travel to all the country shows, but by now, the only states where it was allowed (and a fight was always welcome) were the Northern Territory and Queensland.

We produced this as a low-budget feature would be. Working with showman Michael Karatiana (who had married into the family of legendary showman Roy Bell), we built a 4WD semi-trailer from scratch, loaded it up with his young family, the boxing tent and an old merry-go-round and took it to the most remote areas of Far Northern Queensland. We hung around seedy pubs until we had found enough street fighters willing to become travelling boxers and the Show was ready to hit the road. From tropical Cape York, through the wild Gulf Country, down to the Red Centre, in mining towns, cattle stations and aboriginal missions, we set up the tent and banged the drum, calling in the local tough guys for a fight…

This was an amazing way to discover the outback and unsurprisingly we met a lot of hard men with soft hearts …
